Winding Waters Chapter of the National
Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is named for one of Florida's oldest natural attractions, "Weeki Wachee Springs," which is located in Hernando County.
Scientific research shows that Weeki Wachee Springs and the Weeki Wachee River, which is formed by these spring waters, were known in prehistoric times.
In a more recent period, the spring and river were used by the Indians and other traders as a source of food, water, and transportation. Indian burial mounds are found on the shores of the river.
The river received its name from the early Seminole Indians who called it "Weeki Wachee," which in English means Winding Waters.
